3 Simple Tips to Reduce Overeating on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is almost here! It is a time to see family and friends, a time to rest and a time to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. It is also a day that lends well to overeating. I remember a few Thanksgivings ago eating as much as I could and then feeling sick for the entire next week. (I am very sensitive!) I can assure you that it wasn't worth it and that I won't be doing that again any time soon! Here are my tips to help you combat overeating this Thanksgiving: 1) Eat Well During The Day Before Thanksgiving Dinner It is nearly impossible to avoid overeating if you have been fasting all day before dinner. I know it is tempting because you want to be hungry for the big meal, but when you don't eat enough food, your body will likely go into a stress response because it thinks it is starving. This then leads to overeating because once food is available, the body thinks it needs to eat as much as possible to avoid starvation in the future. This is troublesome any day, but on day like thanksgiving where overeating is practically encouraged, you need to be extra mindful of your food intake before the meal. Eat a healthy breakfast with protein to help power your body for the day and keep you full. 2) Eat Mindfully Focus on the taste, texture and smell of your food. Remember to breathe while you eat as your body needs enough oxygen to digest properly. Chew well, take your time and try to really savor each dish rather than eating as fast as possible. Enjoy the company you are with and the experience of eating as much as the food itself. 3) Take Leftovers Instead of Seconds It is tempting to want to get the most out of your meal by going back for seconds (or thirds!). However, the brain usually hasn't had a chance to register that it is full yet, so by the time you finish the second plate you may find yourself completely stuffed. Instead of going back for seconds, take leftovers home so that you can continue to enjoy the meal through out the week. If you are not hosting come prepared with a tupperware of your own to make leftovers easy to bring home. Happy Thanksgiving! Christie
